RE: Traits??
Hi Patti:-)
The curious tail and the curious ears are a trait while the curious eye isn't for eye shape the mysterious eye shape and the small pupil count for a trait.
This used to be confusing for me as well.
In fact the curious tail was for long the most recessive tail.
You can find more information about traits and breeding and their recessiveness towards eachother here >

RE: Traits??
Hi Patti !

Curious whiskers also are a trait, the most recessive whiskers as of today. Smile

RE: Traits??
Genesis Earth eyes are also a trait .. just not a desirable trait. Gender is a trait .. critical in some cases, but often not considered and rarely marketed.

When people say "trait" what they generally mean is "desirable trait". It's accepted (but that could change in the future) that Genesis Earth is an "undesirable trait" and gender is usually an "unimportant trait".

* Nenya Eun nods to Tad.

I like to use "special trait" or "non genesis trait" as well, but since everybody commonly uses "trait",
I use it as well.

*chuckles* this is exactly why I generally refer to them as non-genesis traits. If we counted your way, there are a lot of traits i wouldn't count (like pink & white fur and pink eyes) cause to me they're far more undesirable on a cat than a genesis fur or eye.

To the original poster, these are the 'genesis' traits

fur: any fur with the word 'genesis' in the name
eye color: any eye color with the word 'genesis' in the name
eye shape: curious
pupil size: big
shade: natural
tail: genesis
ears: genesis
whisker color: silver
whisker shape: guitar

non 'breedable' traits
size: normal (toys and teas do not pass their size as a trait that follows the normal kittycats trait inheritance rules, tho most believe that they tend to run in 'lines' or 'families' similar to the tendency toward twins or other multiple births in human genetics)

anything else is considered a non-genesis (and thus by most definitions is a 'countable' trait) when considering a kitty

RE: Traits??
Yeah, what is, or is not, a trait you want to breed for is a matter of choice. There is the mass-psychology trend to breed for the newest. And there is a strong desire for breeders to work for the most recessive. And there is the market-maker's desire to have some touchstone which is 'good,' 'better,' 'best,' etc., to create some market differential. But one of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard in business is to pick what you love and work on it .. if you love it, it's a safe bet others will, too, and will be willing to pay you for it. So don't let what others say or do overly control what you want to do.

As to why I mentioned Genesis Earth, specifically .. look what's been happening with Starters .. we're starting to see 'new' Genesis traits. That most likely means the 'old' Genesis traits won't be handed out in Starters and their genes will start disappearing. Breeders have worked hard to get away from those Genesis traits. In a year or so, those 'old' Genesis traits are going to actually be truly rare. And, while they are easy to breed because of their dominance, and there will probably always be a stigma because of their past, if you're looking to produce something truly rare, a year or two down the road, squirreling a few 'old' Genesis boxes away in a seed bank might be a safe, no-risk, no-cost, bet.
