The only thing partnering does is ensure two cats will only breed with each other. It has no effect on food consumption, Love gain, or anything else.
Partnering is not necessary unless you need to ensure that two cats only breed with each other. The exception is the Cattery; any cats you want to mate in the Cattery must be partnered. A cat cannot breed with a cat you don't own unless both owners approve a partnership. So no need to worry about keeping company with cats you don't own!
Use one-time partnering. Auto-repartnering is a bad idea for the new breeder, because inevitably you'll change your mind and want to break it. One-time partnering breaks as soon as the kitten box is produced, leaving you free to choose another mate the next time.
