Dumb Question about gender

Hi this has probably been asked loads but I'm still a little confused about gender. Can we tell the gender of the kitten before the box is opened after the Mum gives birth to it or do we have to wait till we open the box and the live kitten appears. I have two paired cats from the same family.

Click on the box and choose 'image' in the pop up menu. This will show what the cat looks like and it's gender.
