I too have had a lot of issues at the few auctions I went to because it is hard to hear Voice for me - I tried turning the volume for it up and the volume for SL, updating my sound card etc and still can hardly hear anything unless I zoom right on top of the person talking.
There should be an option to hear voice from camera position or to hear from avtars position within the voice preferences in SL changing it to avatar position might help.
Suggestion: Make the auctions come through the media/music stream
