Rez the bowl of kibble and place it next to where the cat sleeps and voilà, it will eat on its own.

If the kitty is already at 100 % hunger, it will stay sick for a week even while it is eating unless you give it a "get well" potion, but you can still monitor its progress by checking the hunger percentage and the number of days of recovery remaining. If the hunger percentage is going down and the days of recovery remaining are going down, then everything is working as it should. So, don't assume that because the kitty is still sick, the food isn't working - check the stats. Good luck with your KittyCat and enjoy this wonderful, addictive hobby.
