Suggestion: Gender before birth - Nynaveve Wirefly - 07-10-2011 07:02 PM

Many of us have been having discussions over the desire to know the gender of the box/kitty before it is birthed. Lately I've spoken with several people who have been on "streaks" of all boys, or all girls. Some breedables allow you to know the gender before hand, others not. Having that knowledge before we birth the kitty would allow us to prevent filling our sim with more prims, using food, milk, etc, and give us the opportunity to trade or sell before we unpack. It also helps us pair up kitties for breeding. And an unpacked kitten is much easier to store than a live one!

One suggestion was a "test" (like a pregnancy test) that could be purchased to determine the gender of the box before it is birthed. I don't know if this is possible, given the scripting of the cats. The gender may not be determined until the moment before the cat pops out the box, or it maybe determined as the box is created in the system. Either way, this is another alternative, and would bring income to KC's. Smile

Thanks as always for listening to us!!

LOL!!

Well ok I could live with that if it's the only way...but I totally agree with you..knowwing the sex of the "kitten inside the box" would really help a lot the breeding, we could decide in which moment o unpack a certain kitten according to the posible partners we have...the general problem is prims, and sometimes having to wait with a born kitten till the female/male comes around...can take for ever ..while others have to wait unpacked as we do not have any more room.

PLEAS PLEASE PLEASE...I mean..we already love you KC..but...we would have like a..breeders or....sm (in case certain words are not proper here) if this feature could be added Smile

Thank you!!

I wish they would update them to just show on the box and not another booster or expense, it would bring more happiness to breeding and buying and selling overall and greatly improve the product.

Really could use this before birthing though! Big Grin

I whole-heartedly support this - being on a massive boy-streak myself, I am actually getting so frustrated right now that I went and digged boxes out of inventory that I normally wouldn't have birthed - and they STILL turned out boys! -After that, I ponder what to do - and right now, I luckily realise that I better not do ANYTHING untill I slept on it... Tongue

If we could see the gender of a box before birthing it, it would have SO many advantages -

-It would massively help the market for boxes - by making it much easier to shop for boxes, of course. As a KittyCats-auctioneer myself, I have to tell people time and time again "You can't sell it very well unless it is unboxed so people can see gender". Sometimes, I am then asked "But what do I do if it don't sell? I am out of prims/can't afford more food?"... What to do?

-It would help minor breeders keeping their balance - first of all gender-wise, but secondly also economically. I think we all know the situation where we rushed out and bought cats that we should not have bought, just to even out the gender-balance AGAIN? I met too many people who ended up with way too many cats, and "broke their neck" on it. While KittyCats of course make money on this, I am 100% sure than more money would come out of it in the long run if new and/or minor breeders had better ways to "population-control". -And telling the gender on boxes is a major factor there.

-And then... Basically, as I said in chat earlier, I would vote for ANYTHING that could prevent my current frustration from repeating:

(Rant incomming!):

-Most of my cats are bred for traits, the more the better - and of those, ALL the boxes I birthed the past 6 days are boys! ALL of them. The only girls I got is a cocoa&white that I mean to breed into that line (my first attempt to pure-breed), and the other is an RFL-offspring that I mean to breed back to her dad.
-So, in my multi-traited line, I got this 6 days old girl and then 8 or so younger boys (would be much more if I hadn't sold some and given some away) - of which I would REALLY like to breed all of them! They are great cats, -I- bred them, I know a lot of their hidden traits, and I wish to breed them out. -But how?? I got no girls to breed them with - and I can't just go outhere and find other 6- and 7-traiters w. key lime etc. in the background... can I?
Having FINALLY reached this stage in my breeding where I can start cross-breeding furs into super-traited cats, and breed hidden stuff OUT of multi-traited cats, I find myself just staring at all those boys and just not knowing what to do.
Sure, there will always be frustrations in breedables, but this is the first time I really go all "Errr....".
I don't want to sell these cats - and I can't in ANY way afford buying girls enough of that quality to breed them with. So... yeah. I really don't know. Hope for a "girl-week" next week? -And have the boys sitting around with 100% love while they grow up? -And what if it's still all boys - or even MOSTLY boys, next week? Heck, I don't know. Confused
-But yes - ALL that being said - please do give us a way to prevent situations like these? Being able to see gender on boxes would be awfully brilliant.

/End of Rant

As a "small" breeder myself, I range from 2-16 cats depending on the day, week, month, etc, I would LOVE this feature. I only breed Siamese Blues. I don't sell them, I breed them for me because I love them. I have four - five traits in them and I got two gorgeous boxes this week...both were girls, sigh. Unfortunately (maybe) I didn't sleep on it and sent all but two to the menagerie. The plan was to send them all to the menagerie, but I noticed that one of the girls had mysterious eyes and that stopped me as I had though all had curious eyes. So, I then picked the best boy and kept him. I am back down to two. If I had known I had two girls, I would have just held on to the boxes until I had boys for them. I am quite happy with my little herd of Blues and culling as I get them better and better.

I am not sure WHY there is the overall trend of not having the gender on the nest/basket/bundle in breedables, but I don't think its a good thing at the end of the day.

RE: Suggestion: Gender before birth - Melmia Misfit - 07-11-2011 12:12 AM

I have some boxes I'd LOVE to open because I can try to get new traits into a blood line.

I now fear I need backups, and back ups of back ups, to ensure I can do so. I have three breeding couples. After one last kitten it'll drop to two breeding couples simple because I can't handle the price. (The club I worked at as payed security closed down completely without much notice).

It makes me scared when my current breeding couples are retired, if I open my boxes of my kittens to slowly try to make my own lovelies I just get all the same gender and that sucks when I know their lines and not some random box/cat from some store.

RE: Suggestion: Gender before birth - Nocshadue Balbozar - 07-11-2011 04:47 AM

I agree with Saga on this one..I think we are bringing a little too much RL into SL as having no way to know the sex of the kitten before you birth it makes LOTS of unwanted kittens. I think it would go a long way to stabilize the market in fact. Especially when I was first getting started and most of my boxes were 1 and 2 traiters that are not easy to sell, it made it very heard to recoup from an all girl or all boy week. I think, knowing the sex of the box would actually add to the fun, you still have the anticipation of waiting for the box itself, and its easy to hang on to a box if you want and/or swap down the road. And it would ease a lot of the frustration and add to the fun, especially for those trying to breed on a small scale on a buget.

I don't like the idea od a 'test kit' as much as simply blue and pink boxes. One, because the test will most likely be very expensive and therefore effectively unavailable to the majority and 2, because that alone wouldn't have the effect of removing a portion of the unwanted cats that spend their lives posed in various markets that we, their owners are paying for lol.

I am currently facing a prim problem - both in my home cattery and in my shop - so I am really not able to open up any boxes.
I know I am desperate for girls right now .... and I am blessed with some really amazing boxes in my inventory.
Currently I do not dare to open up any boxes to try my luck on getting a girl or 2 out of them boxes.

But if I am "blessed" with boys out of this amazing boxes .. I am forced to take them to an auction (even if I would not want to part with the traits they offer) - or even worse if I can not sell them at the auction I would be forced to menagerie these good kitties ??)

Pls simply get us a gender sign in the floating text on the cute popping boxes.

Thank you so much

RE: Suggestion: Gender before birth - JC Aferdita - 07-11-2011 08:11 AM

if it is possible for a gendersign I'm all for it =) the pregnancy test I'm not so much for, I'm trying to save all my lindens toward food and eventually when I get enough I want to permapet my kitties. To add a pregnancy test to that cost isn't something I would look forward to. But if there is a gender-sign already on the box, that I would be overjoyed with =)

* Rocky Balzibo also agrees with previous posters that the sex should be on the box and has nothing more to add. Smile
