The Menagerie is the Happy Hunting Grounds for your cats.
When you send a cat there, you get a store credit (called Kitty Dollars) which you can use to purchase items from the KittyCatS! Main Store.
You can also purchase Kitty Dollars with Linden Dollars (via your Dock).
BUT .. there is a major difference ... there are "Menagerie Cats" (one of the Special Collections) which can be purchased with Kitty Dollars obtained by sending in cats (or boxes); Kitty Dollars purchased through your Dock can NOT be used to purchase these special starters.
If you accidentally send a cat to the Menagerie, you can obtain a (free) Magic Bottle at the Main Store which will allow you to retrieve it. This bottle is, basically, the same as your Dock, but is single-use, and can only obtain cats RECENTLY sent to the Menagerie. (Your Dock only works on your Cattery.) When you pull a cat back from the Menagerie, the store credit is returned.

"Happy Hunting Grounds" is, I'm afraid, a euphemism that may not translate into many languages. Menagerie is like kitty heaven (another euphemism). If one wants to be dark, it's the place where you send cats to die. Much more neutrally, I think of it as a place to send cats you don't want anymore - back into the bin or the hopper, back into the void from which the cat came.

Or you could think of it as a 'trading post' for tigres!
You send your spare kitteh into the void and reincarnate them,
into a big rainbow tigger that everyone is envious of!
I have a large machine at the Mill called 'THE MENAGERIE'.
Whats in the big barrels under the stairs behind it is questionable.
Then again, my signature says it all...

I thought the menagerie was an eternal retirement home for cats. Since kittycats kitties never die, hence the eternal.

the Menagerie is a lovely place where the kitties live and play and enjoy life without ever dying
they love it there and if an owner sends a cat or box there because they can't keep it, the kitties do NOT mind at all as they LOVE it
it's not a "heaven" as "heaven" implies death and KittyCatS never ever, ever die. there are more secrets which are quite fun about the menagerie... and it's been rumored that some cats sneak out and wander around the universe for fun
you may have even seen one of two and not known it! so rest assured, it's not a death place at all. they arrive quickly and safely, just like they do to the online cattery
